Before this lesson

Complete the box model, Flexbox, Grid and responsive layout. Know how to inspect computed styles.

What you will be able to do

Debug sizing, layout and cascade systematically and verify fixes with counterexamples.

Understand the mechanism

Describe the failing width, content and control before assuming a browser defect. Preserve the triggering data and inspect bounds and scroll width to locate the first oversized box and its layout parent.

Separate allocation from intrinsic content: inspect parent width, automatic minimums, fixed media sizes and wrapping. A flex item can resist shrinking despite flex:1. min-width:0 permits shrinkage but does not itself decide how text should render.

Change one condition at a time. Multiple clipping and priority overrides can conceal the cause. Retest short and long content, larger text and neighboring widths to ensure the fix generalizes.

Measure performance rather than blaming a layout system. Interleaved DOM reads and writes can force layout work, but this exercise concerns constraints. Establish correctness before optimizing.

Runnable example

Run HTML examples as separate .html files in a modern browser. Prepare resource files and multi-file modules as described in the lesson.

<!doctype html>
<html lang="en"><head><meta charset="utf-8"><meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width,initial-scale=1"><title>Honeysuck practice</title></head><body>
<style>
.row{display:flex;gap:12px;max-width:460px;border:1px solid #ccc;padding:16px}
.content{flex:1;min-width:0}.content p{overflow-wrap:anywhere}
.action{align-self:flex-start;flex:none;padding:8px;white-space:nowrap}
</style><div class="row"><div class="content"><h2>Course resource</h2><p>https://example.com/this-is-a-deliberately-long-unbroken-resource-identifier-for-testing</p></div><button class="action">Open</button></div>
</body></html>

Trace and verify

Save the working version, remove both shrink and wrap rules, and reproduce at 320 pixels. Restore min-width first and inspect the still-overflowing text; then restore wrapping and verify both control and content fit.

Common mistakes and boundaries

The button is a layout fixture without application behavior; implement its action or replace it with a real link before use. Hiding root overflow is not evidence of a corrected box.

Practice challenge

Use a longer action label, a three-line title and a grid parent, recording overflow for each case.

Reference solution and reasoning

If the action itself no longer fits, switch the row to a stacked layout or allow an appropriate label wrap instead of crushing the content. Different constraints require different fixes.
